The problem for Harry Stuhldreher was that the V-12 program wasn't based at the University of Wisconsin, after all.

“We got a note telling us to report to the University of Michigan, and that all we could take was one change of clothes and a toothbrush,” recalled John Gallagher. “At first, we didn't know if anyone else was going. We got to talking, and we'd say, ‘Where you going?' ‘Michigan.' ‘Me, too!'”

The group reporting to Ann Arbor included four 1942 starters, Fred Negus, Elroy Hirsch, Jack Wink, and Bob Hanzlik, along with Gallagher, Bob Rennebohm, Hank Olshanski, Earl Maves, and Farnham “Gunner” Johnson. They reported in July 1943.

“We got on the train and went over there and walked around on Sunday morning to the fieldhouse and the stadium,” Hanzlik recalled. “We had never played at Michigan. Jesus. I looked down at that stadium…I had never seen anything like that.” The cavernous bowl, which could seat more than 85,000, left the Badgers awestruck.
