Chapter 9

Jealousy nearly made Thomas’ gut explode when he saw Tessa sitting at the same table as Kevin Taylor, a reported Casanova. It was said that one look would get a woman into his bed. Now that man was near his wife. He was near the wife that he told to shut up. So Tessa loved playing a practical joke. Thomas thought that he could get used to that characteristic if they could work out a day to play the jokes. Maybe they could have a practical-joke Friday or something. She seemed to be the mischievous type. He shook himself and continued with the presentation, which went flawlessly. He was a little hurt to discover that Tessa wanted to open a spa by seeing her in his class. Why hadn't she mentioned it while they were on the beach? Well, he'd ask this question as soon as they returned home.

As soon as the seminar ended, Thomas sat at the desk, waiting for anyone with questions. The only person that had a question was Tessa. She strolled up to him and smiled.

"Nice class. Is this what you do for a living? Are you a professor?" she inquired. Since there wasn't a line behind her, Thomas decided that he should express himself.

"Tessa, I apologize for yelling at you. I wasn't prepared for a practical joke. I shouldn't have told you to shut up. And—"

She glared at him.

"Let's talk over lunch," she suggested.

"At a restaurant? That might not fit into our weekly budget. You see, I splurged on the wedding dinner that—"

"That we didn't even get to eat. Thomas, look, I'm not used to the whole being poor thing, so be patient with me. What I really want is to not go home," she confessed. "Because your sister-in-law will be there, and I feel suffocated." Thomas nodded, making a mental note to pull money from his savings. Tessa looked like she was about to have a breakdown.

"Okay," he said. She grinned and held out a hand. He stood and grasped it. This was his own personal classroom, so the materials were fine on the desk. After locking the door, Thomas led his wife into the elevator.

"So you decided on starting a spa? That was unexpected."

"I honestly joined this seminar to get out of the house. The decision to start a spa was unexpected," Tessa admitted, which made Thomas feel better.

They walked to the restaurant in silence. Tessa's green eyes studied the islanders as they bounced about. Her eyes lit up when she spotted the furniture store.

"Is that the furniture-building shop?" Tessa inquired. That immediately made Thomas feel inadequate.

"Yes. That is Mr. Campbell's business,” he confirmed.

"Maybe we should stop in after lunch, see if he has an opening," Tessa suggested.

"I'd rather not. I have to teach a computer seminar," he reported as they entered the seafood restaurant. Like he expected, Tessa's eyes lit up.

"This place looks great!" she said as they chose a table. Thomas hesitated to tell her that it was on the expensive side.
