Chapter Sixteen

Harper sat at the table packaging the last batch of molly she made. She’d whipped up over five thousand pills in a rental lab at the university. She had a work-study job on campus doing random stuff for Professor Edgar. Most of the time it was things he didn’t want to do. It ranged from grading papers and performing experiments for his labs to going to get Professor Edgar’s lunch. There wasn’t anything Harper didn’t do for him. And in return Professor Edgar gave Harper free reign of his office and laboratory.

Harper majored in biochemistry on a full-ride scholarship due to her academic excellence. She inherited the smart gene from her father. He was a chemist too but on a different level. He worked in the dope game with his older brother making their product. He was known as Professor due to the way he cooked crack. Dope feigns would come from other states just to get a taste of the butter he cooked. Harper didn’t get a chance to really know her father. He died during a drug deal gone bad when she was young. An undercover policeman killed Professor when he tried to get away. Harper’s mother Angel grieved her father’s death. She’s serving time in a women’s prison for drug trafficking and money laundering. Professor was granny’s youngest son. She agreed to take care of Harper and Fayette when Angel was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. The feds offered her a deal if she told on Professor’s brother Eddie. Angel took her time without hesitation. She’d rather rot in jail than help the feds and for her loyalty, Eddie has been taking care of Angel and her girls. Eddie has tried to reach out to Harper through his son Dom, but she doesn’t want anything to do with him. She refused to let her parents’ fate become hers.

Harper’s been on the dean’s list for the past three years with one more to go before graduating. Professor Edgar asked Harper to consider applying for the graduate program. He felt she would be an excellent candidate. He admired her intelligence, tenacity, and hard work. She made his job easy since Harper did most of the work. She spent so much time in the lab it got her to thinking of a way to make some easy money. After a conversation with her cousin Dom, Harper decided to manufacture molly. Her decision has made her a lot of money.
