“Noted,” Aiden said carefully. “I shall try my best.”

For some inexplicable reason, Eva was a bit nervous heading into the groom shower.

She took a moment on the front step of the townhouse Inho and Ms. Lee were renting and fixed her off-the-shoulder flowered extravaganza of a gown. She wanted to make sure her hyacinths weren’t crushed - she was sad she had to give them to Ollie and Henny and not keep them for herself.

“Pardon me, ma’am.”

Someone walked by her to head inside, and she was confused when she figured out who it was. “Aiden?”

“Eva?”

They stared at each other in their fancy outfits. She couldn’t take her eyes off the frilly little flowered collar of his jacket he wore to match the floral theme.

“Did you not recognize me or something?” she wondered.

“Honestly, no. I’ve never seen you out of your work clothes…” The phrasing made Eva blush from head to toe, which made Aiden flustered. “I mean, wearing casual clothes.”

“Well. You look nice and on theme.”

“You think? I really tried to commit for them.” Eva thought that was so sweet. So, so sweet, his ear was even getting a little red—“You look quite beautiful as well.”

She was caught so off guard by Aiden’s compliment she didn’t have a response, so they continued to stare at each other in swelling, wondrous silence. She saw that he brought flowers for them as well, a bright bouquet of sunflowers. He was secretly such a softhearted person.

“Evie girl! I’m here! Can you help me with my—” Her mother’s trilling sliced through the space between them, “Oh, Aiden! Hi!”

He blinked hard as he looked away and smiled at her mom. “Hello, Ms. Lawson.”

“Now what did I tell you?”

“Gen. That is a lovely dress.”

Her mom let Aiden call her by her first name? Eva didn’t realize they’d had that conversation.

“Excuse me, I believe they wanted us to set up the activity first thing.” Aiden excused himself and Eva could only follow him with her eyes as he went inside. He looked so handsome, she actually couldn’t believe it.

Her mother gave her a peculiar little glance and wondered, “How are you feeling? You haven’t texted since you called.”

“I know, I’m fine.” Eva wasn’t lying.

“You do seem like it. You’re smiling again. I love your smile.”

“Everyone says we have the same smile!”

The two of them laughed so heartily and poked at each other’s cheeks, happy they had an obvious mother-daughter connection, and no one ever commented how she looked like anyone else.

“Oh, Aiden was so handsome though, wasn’t he?”

Eva clammed up at her mother’s random comment, which didn’t seem random at all. Then Eileen popped out of the door and saved Eva from answering, “Hurry, we’re about to start! Glad you’re feeling better, Evie!”

“Mom, you told?!” Of course her mom told.

“She didn’t say anything, I just knew,” Eileen confirmed their best friendship subliminal connection was the culprit. “Aiden’s looking particularly handsome today, by the way.”

What did that have to do with anything!

This was going to be dangerous.
