Navigating Technology’s Paradoxes in Online Treatment
Leora Trub and Danielle Magaldi
Introduction
The possibility of conducting therapy over a screen brings about an essential dilemma for clinicians. On the one hand, for many, clinical intuition indicates that being bodies in a room together is a therapeutic imperative for optimal treatment (e.g. Rees & Stone, 2005; Simpson & Reid, 2014). At the same time, many clinicians engage in computer-mediated treatment with positive results. Meanwhile, research continues to underscore the way that screens and ever-present digital technology can fuel disconnection and prevent intimacy (e.g. Hanlon, 2001; Przybylski & Weinstein, 2012; Turkle, 2011; 2015). Could the therapeutic dyad possibly be the sole exception to these adverse effects? Faced with these potential inconsistencies that complicate engaging in technology-mediated psychotherapy, therapists may find themselves clamoring for resolution when in fact there is something important about the dilemma itself. Indeed, finding a way to hold the different, often opposing elements of our connection to technology is necessary for creating a therapeutic experience where our patients can understand the impact of technology on their lives while also work to shape their relationship with it in a way that best serves their needs.
