Twelve days into her captivity Tori stood in front of the wall display in the suite she shared with her captors. She sipped a tall glass of linorat, the Kobar answer to iced tea, and stared out at the image of Earth. Cassik had shown her how to alter the display. It could show her the view from any external camera on the ship as well as anything in the extensive image library. Somehow this was always what she came back to, Earth in its entirety. The changes made since the Kobar invasion were not visible with this view. She let her mind drift backward, erasing the last four years. Suddenly, she had just graduated from college and no one had ever heard of the Kobar.

“You have been staring at that one image for nearly an hour now,” Xoktal pointed out. “Would you like me to select something else?” He sat on the sofa across the room. He’d been working on one of the handheld computers Cassik mentioned during their ‘privileges’ conversation. Of course, the Kobar version of an iPad had a holographic display and complete sensory integration.

She glanced at Xoktal then shook her head. “It helps me think.”

He set the device aside and stood. “Anything you’re willing to share with me?”

“It’s nothing worth sharing. I was just indulging my imagination.” It wasn’t a lie. She knew better than to lie to them. To her knowledge, Xoktal wasn’t empathic but he effortlessly read her expressions. Most of her spankings had been because of defiance or lying.

Cassik had been here for lunch, but he left to run some mysterious errand. It was Xoktal’s turn to babysit her and the constant supervision routine was starting to irritate. Rytez was off doing whatever Rytez did. He never told her what he had planned for the day or when he would return.

“My schedule is relatively clear for a change. What would you like to do this afternoon?” He stood directly in front of her, hands clasped behind his back. Somehow he managed to look militant and approachable at the same time. And so damn handsome. It wasn’t fair for anyone to be this physically appealing. And the other two were even worse.

She wanted to hate him, to hate all of them. But the resentment that consumed her when she was captured was slowly burning itself out. She had never interacted with the Kobar before. They were the faceless villains who had dismantled her life. That was all she knew and all she thought she wanted to know about them. The past twelve days had changed all that.

Her captors might have become harder to hate, but she still resented how disrespectful their culture was to humans, especially human females. She’d heard all the justifications. “We are fighting for the survival of our species.” “We tried to work with human leaders but they refused.” And her personal favorite, “You started the war then lost.” Which was a slightly less offensive way of saying, “You are a conquered people.
