“Come on in,” Grace said to whoever had knocked on the door. I was in the kitchen, eating a blueberry muffin as I waited for my strawberry smoothie to finish spinning in the blender.

“She’s in the kitchen,” Grace added.

My ears perked up at the mention of my location in the home. Footsteps neared.

His scent revealed him before I saw him.

The scent of natural musk, expensive cologne, and french vanilla. I closed my eyes to calm my racing heart. When my lids lifted, Theo in all his masculine, manly aura stood before me. I leaned against the counter and cut my eyes to the wall behind him, afraid to make eye contact.

“Hey…” I voiced awkwardly. “What are you doing here?”

“You thought I wasn’t going to track you down?” he asked in a voice soft, yet assertive.

“I don’t know what I thought you would do, but showing up to my best friend’s house definitely wasn’t on my Bingo card.”

“Well, having you dip on me at my birthday party wasn’t on mine.”

I tossed my muffin wrapper into the trash before pouring my smoothie into the glass I had set aside earlier.

“Do you want some?” I asked.

“No.”

After pouring the drink into the cup, I lifted it to my lips and took a generous sip. I set the cup back on the counter and gave him my undivided attention. “I want to apologize for how I handled myself yesterday. It was unfair to you to blindside you like I did.”

“Why did you?” he asked.

“I met some of your old girlfriends last night. They all had the same story…”

He chuckled. “My prior relationships were transactional arrangements my parents were involved in. All of those women lacked substance. They were pretty faces with no real personality besides being rich. You are nothing like those women, and our situation was nothing like the ones I shared with them. I wish you would have come to me before jumping to conclusions.”

I looked down at my fingers and twiddled with a nonexistent hangnail. “I should have come to you before jumping to conclusions. I’m sorry for ruining your birthday…”

“It’s not alright, but I forgive you. You really had a nigga feeling some type of way.” Theo cleared his throat and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “Last night, I realized we were moving too fast. I’m ready to trust someone, love someone, and grow with someone. You have a lot of healing to do before you get to that point. Your ex really did a number on you which is going to destroy all of your future relationships until you heal from it.”

I tucked my lips into my mouth to refrain from saying something else I’d regret along the line. He was allowed to feel how he felt, and I had to respect him for that.

“I thought you were the one for me. I thought you’d be my special person, but after last night… I think it’s best if we do take some time apart. This has been a crazy week, and we both need to just focus on ourselves.
