CHAPTER NINE

MICAH MADE THE trip to her apartment by darting through the streets and finding the paths with the fewest traffic lights. He hadn’t forgotten how to navigate through this city.

Would he remember how to navigate her body with just as much ease?

Somehow she knew he would. Her hands wound together in her lap, gripping each other for support as she waited for him to make his way to the other side of town.

Why hadn’t she suggested his hotel? It was closer.

Maybe because she needed to be on her own turf. To be able to keep herself rooted to reality and not go flitting off into some kind of fantasyland.

Wasn’t that where she was already? A fantasyland that she’d never dreamed she could visit again.

His hand came off the gearshift and covered hers. “You okay?”

No, she wasn’t, but there was no way he could know it was because she was frantic to arrive at their destination. So she wove her fingers of her left hand through his. “Yes. I just never realized how long this drive was before.”

His teeth flashed. “I agree.”

Then they were less than a mile away. “Turn left at this corner. The complex is about three blocks down on the right. You can park in my space. Three oh one.”

Micah swung into the apartment building and followed her directions to the parking garage. It took her eyes a moment to adjust from the sun outside to the lights inside the structure, but her space was just around the corner. He carried her hand to the gear lever and sat it there for a minute, making her shiver as together they shifted the car into first. His thumb trailed across the side of her hand as he looked at her again. “Are you sure, Lia? Very, very sure?”

“Yes.” She hoped he was asking about the sex and not just about parking in her space before realizing what a ridiculous thought that was. Of course it was about the sex.

He leaned over and kissed her again, and this time his mouth was softer, exploring her on a level that made her insides knot and her heart pound. She didn’t want to leave this car, but she was pretty sure her building had cameras inside the parking area, so she reached over and clicked the door release, the sound cracking through the intimate space.

When he looked at her, she attempted a smile. “Cameras.”

“Ah. I thought for a second you might be running away.”

Was that a reference to the way she’d left at graduation? But when she glanced at his face, she found it relaxed and sexy. There were no lines of tension that she could see.

“No. I just don’t want the security people to get an eyeful.” She gave a nervous laugh.

He got out of his door and made it to her side before she’d had a chance to swing her legs out. He reached for her hand and tugged her up and out of the car, one side of her jacket sliding down her arm.
