Ten

"I am the shinrin baba," the woman says as she keeps us all under her control. “The forest witch.” There's an icicle hovering at my back, right where my heart is. "One wrong move, and I'll have you dead. So, please don't make me angry."

All of us—Daichi, Isabelle, Carter, Nicholas, Sawyer, and I—are held hostage her threat, with an icicle pointing at our spines, the ice able to puncture our hearts at any moment. I knew of the witches in the woods, but not once have I heard of such power. I can smell it emanating off her. The magic that radiates from the forest witch is like a water body emitting an exorbitant amount of mist.

While keeping us still, she finds the time to fetch some tea. We watch her, tension thick in the air like a blanketing fog, as she struts around to gather her ingredients. She mashes tea leaves it in her pestle before running hot water through them. After that, she tips the concoction into a miniature kettle and pours a small cup of the drink for herself. When she’s finished, she lifts her attention to us, narrowing her eyes to inspect her intruders. I'm not getting used to that glassy, black eyeball. Her other eye is equally as chilling, a bright violet in color, similar to a haunting gem stone.

She seems ethereal, out of this world. Capable of splitting us in two without difficulty. The power I sense from her feels ancient. She rubs the residue of the tea leaves from her fingers and picks up her cup. "So. Explain."

"I’m sorry for having come here without permission. We wanted to reimburse you, I can promise that. We’re tired, and this is was supposed to be our a rest stop," I say. "We were going to leave in an hour."

"A rest stop. You think my home is a place for strangers to use as they please?"

"We were hoping to leave before you arrived," Carter mutters. "Why the hell are you so strong anyway? Witches have to use talismans to carry out their spells."

"Shush." The witch waves her hand, and the icicle behind Carter moves, shunting deeper into his back. My breath hitches in my throat as I worry about where it pierced him. He lets out a pained cry but settles down soon after, taking in sharp breaths to lessen his distress. "Let the pale one speak."

"I told you that this was a bad idea," I hear Isabelle mutter to herself. "See where this got us." I try to ignore Isabelle’s bitterness. It’s not helping the situation at all.

"Who are you?" I ask the witch.

She tips a brow at me, running the tip of her index finger around the rim of her cup. "Shouldn't I be the one asking that?"

"Maybe. I’m not sure if we’re past the point of politeness yet.”

She cocks her head. “Well? Are you going to tell me?”

“We're from the Crescent pack. Sawyer's the alpha's son, Carter from a wealthy family, and Nicholas... well, he's.
