CHAPTER SEVEN

LEILANI SAT AT the table for a few minutes, brain buzzing about what to do. He’d not really answered her question about the job, but she’d told him point-blank where she stood with that, so yeah. She’d put her cards on the table, careerwise. The next move there was up to him.

Emotionally though, there were still a lot of things she hadn’t told him.

Things like if he’d have kissed her at the waterfall, she’d have let him. Would have allowed him a lot more than kisses too, if she were honest. An old, familiar lump of fear clogged her throat before she swallowed hard against it. Much as it terrified her to admit, she wanted Holden, plain and simple. If she were honest, she’d wanted him for a while now. That certainly explained the awareness sparking between them whenever he was around. She sipped her mai tai and tried to focus on the dancers onstage, but it was no use. All she could seem to think about now was him. About how well they’d worked together on the surfboard kid’s case. About how adorable he’d looked that morning, awkward but adorable. About all the things he’d shared with her that day and how he’d made her feel less alone. About how he’d kept up with her, even though it had been hard with his leg. About how he’d not given up or given in.

He was kind and smart and more than competent as a surgeon. And truthfully, she’d always been a sucker for men with brains and brawn. Not to mention his dreamy hazel bedroom eyes.

Gah!

A waitress came by and replenished Leilani’s drink, but she barely noticed now. All she could think about was the hug they’d shared earlier at the waterfall. The feel of him in her arms, the heat of his body warming her, the thud of his heart beneath her ear, steady, strong, solid.

The long-standing walls around her heart tumbled down even further.

Holden had lived through horrific events, just like her. He understood her in a way no other man ever had. And he didn’t treat her differently because of what she’d been through either, whereas all the past men she’d been with had acted like she was made out of fragile china or something once they knew about the accident. Leilani wasn’t breakable, well, not to that extent anyway.

She resisted the urge to rub the uncomfortable ache in her chest—yearning mixed with apprehension.

The trouble was Holden made her vulnerable in a whole new way. Part of her wanted to put as much distance as possible between them, let him go his way and stick to her own solitary path. But the other part of her longed to go after him, to find him on the beach and tell him that she didn’t want forever, but she’d sure as hell take right now.

He made her want to take risks again. And that was perhaps the scariest thing of all.

Also, the most exhilarating. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d felt so alive.
