Not only did the trade get Ben out of Oakland and to a geographic area much closer to us, something even better was happening: The day Ben joined the Royals, they were in first place with a ten-game lead over their closest competitor! Kansas City had a strong team—they were in the World Series the year before, losing in seven games to the San Francisco Giants. On top of that, Ben had a history with Ned Yost, the Royals manager. You know from a previous chapter the relationship that he had with Ned, and he roomed with Ned Jr. at Dallas Baptist.

It was a happy time all around.

Ben started out with a bang with the Royals. On his first road trip he hit a couple of home runs!

The fans loved Ben and Ben loved the fans. “Some of my earliest memories were being taken to the Royals games at the ‘K’ (short for Kauffman Field),” he would recall for the local fans and media. It was the truth and the community just ate it up.

The Royals made the playoffs, where they beat the Toronto Blue Jays in six games. With that victory, they won their way to the World Series, where they ended up defeating the New York Mets in five games.

It’s at this point that I would love to give you a heartwarming recollection of the Victory Parade in Kansas City. The truth, however, is that the parade was a nightmare for Cindi and me. We got trapped in the middle of a huge crowd and so the reality is that we didn’t see one second of the parade. I can tell you a great deal about the people surrounding me, but that is of no consequence to our story.

It was after the parade that day that Ben raised a fascinating question to me. “How do you top this?” he asked, referring of course, to the World Series win. “Win one with the Cardinals?” he added with a smile, knowing my hardcore devotion to the St. Louis team.

I think my answer surprised him. “No, it’s not winning one with the Cards,” I answered. “It would be winning one with the Cubs!”

“Really?”

“Sure. Think about it,” I explained. “The Cardinals have won the championship several different times, so it’s not that big of a deal. But if you won the World Series with the Cubs,” I paused for maximum effect, “That would be legendary.

“But what’s most important is doing what God wants you to do. That’s what is going to bring joy and satisfaction to your life.”

And that’s what I believe, and I know that’s what Ben believes. So isn’t it ironic that people are always going to remember who was the Most Valuable Player for the Chicago Cubs the year they finally won the World Series?

Who says God doesn’t have a sense of humor?
