Chapter Ten

Willow awoke the following morning to a burning pain along her swollen arm. She inhaled sharply, unable to put the slightest pressure on it without feeling a piercing jolt throughout her body.

Her soft cry must have alarmed Cammy, who hurriedly tossed off her covers and scampered out of bed to her side. “Willow, how bad is it?”

“Very bad, I think. We had better summon the doctor. My arm feels like it is on fire.”

“Oh, dear. Lie still. I’ll wake Aunt Charlotte and then run downstairs to ask Mr. Ashcott to summon the doctor. I know it is still early, but I’m sure most of their staff will be up by now.” She tossed on her robe and slipped her feet into her slippers before rushing into their aunt’s room. The connecting door between their rooms had been left ajar all night.

Willow leaned back and closed her eyes as another wave of pain overcame her. She heard her sister urgently whispering to her aunt and then heard her aunt’s response. “Stay with your sister, Cammy. I’ll alert Mr. Ashcott.”

“The magistrate wanted to be told as well,” Cammy said in a hushed tone. “Have Mr. Ashcott alert him as well. He will be angry if we fail to tell him.”

Her aunt sighed. “Yes, I think you are right.”

Willow heard the door swing open and then quietly click closed as her aunt left them.

Cammy returned to her side and put a cold compress on her head. “I hope this will help. You feel a little warm. I’m sure you have a fever.”

Willow licked her tongue across her parched lips. “I think I do.”

“You certainly do. So much for our trip to London. We cannot possibly leave for another day or two, perhaps longer.” She crossed to the window to draw aside the drapes and open the window. “Does the sun bother you? I think a little light will do you good. The room was dark and sweltering.”

“I don’t mind. You sound jubilant,” Willow said with a strained laugh, fully understanding the reason for her sister’s glee.

“I am not at all. Relieved is a better word for it. How can I be jubilant when you are in pain? But I’ve made no secret of my desire to return home. I don’t want to go to London to be ogled by strangers and drawn into their manipulative courtship games.”

“I don’t think any of us were eager for it, but Uncle John and Aunt Sophie will be disappointed if we don’t visit them. So will our cousins. They’ve all managed to enter into love matches for themselves, so you should not reject the marriage mart out of hand. They found good men to love them. With their guidance, I’m sure you will do very well.”

“Me? What about you? Or has the handsome magistrate already claimed your heart?”

“Cammy, please do not say anything to him. I think I am in love with him, but he hasn’t made up his mind yet about me. And now I think the doctor will have to cut open my arm again.
