Chapter Nine

Absently Lila wondered where her beautiful new cloak had been left. All she could recall was seeing the man on horseback riding towards her before she broke into a run.

Penelope had been pointing at her, screaming something. What had she said?

Curled into a ball, Lila pulled her skirts tightly around her legs. Finding the small cave had been fortunate. Finding it unoccupied by anything that might want to eat her had been a miracle. She reached for more of the branches she’d collected and pulled them forward adding them to the ones she’d already piled to block the entrance. Hopefully it would be enough to keep her hidden and safe from predators. Both man and beast.

Hopefully in the morning, she’d be able to see which direction the sun rose and gauge which way to travel. If she remembered correctly, the Ross keep was on the western shore of the isle. The only problem was she wasn’t sure in which direction she’d been running.

The crack of breaking branches alerted her that something or someone approached. With a shaky hand, Lila picked up a pointy branch and pushed herself deeper into the cave until her back was flush against the damp dirt of the wall.

The silence stretched for a long while but just as she was about to relax there was another crack, this one sounded closer.

Lila held her breath and kept vigil. Finally, she saw what caused the sound. It was her pursuer. Thankfully, he didn’t seem to notice the cave or if he did, he’d assumed she’d not fit in it.

He murmured something, seeming to be annoyed to not have found her then meandered away. Lila continued holding her breath until her lungs protested.

What would she do? There was no telling in which direction he’d gone. A sob stuck in her throat, and she covered her mouth with both hands to muffle any sound.

A part of her worried that Penelope had been harmed, but it was more possible her sister had known about the contingency of men heading to Keep Ross. Then it occurred to her that the keep had been attacked after the laird, Munro, and the warriors had gone to Mackinnon lands. It’s possible her sister had not only known but played a part in what had occurred.

There was little to be done for herself, the warriors, or the ones at the keep. All Lila could do was wait. Expecting it would be a long cold night, she pulled herself into as tight a ball as she could knowing it would be impossible to sleep.
