CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Lex was going to need to start from scratch. She’d assumed right from the beginning that it had to be Jeffrey Schreck who was behind the theft, but now she was rethinking things. Between his reaction to the news of the theft and Hecate’s lack of a reaction at all, she actually found that she believed him when he said he was innocent.

As she parked the car and got out, this time she made no attempt to stop Hecate from coming with her. There was no point anyway, since Hecate didn’t seem to listen to any of Lex’s suggestions, but there was also something strangely comforting about having the cat along. If she did end up reacting to the presence of the book, it could be a big clue to lead Lex to it.

Still, it was utterly strange to be walking along the shorefront of Incanton with a cat trotting at her side. And even though it was the middle of the day, it was stranger still that the few people Lex encountered didn’t seem to bat an eyelid at the cat at all. Maybe Hecate was more prone to wandering around than Lex had realized.

She found herself heading for familiar territory: Lost and Found By the Sea, where she knew she would get a welcome from Ian Blacksmythe.

Ian glanced up as Lex walked into his shop and smiled, taking in both her and the cat in one look. “Back again so soon, eh?” he joked. “Is Hecate giving you the town tour? Better late than never, I suppose.”

Lex looked down at the cat as she walked over to Ian; for her part, Hecate looked back, almost as if she knew she was being talked about, and then sat down at Ian’s feet, quite content.

“Actually, she just followed me out of the shop,” Lex said. “We’ve had a bit of an adventure this morning. I’m trying to find some information—A Curious Bookstore was broken into last night.”

Ian’s face fell. “Oh, no! I’m sorry to hear that. Was there any damage?”

“No, that’s the curious thing,” Lex sighed. “It looks as though nothing was forced, although they managed to get past two locked doors. They stole a valuable book, and we’re pretty eager to get it back.”

“I can imagine!” Ian exclaimed. He cast an eye around his own shop, as if envisioning how terrible it would be for someone to break into it. “I haven’t seen any books today, but I’ll help if I can. When did it happen?”

“We aren’t precisely sure, but sometime from late last night to the very early hours of this morning,” Lex explained. “It had already happened when we arrived to open up.”

Ian’s face changed, his eyes narrowing in thought. “Hold on,” he said. “I might have seen something. I suffer from insomnia from time to time, you see, and when it comes on I like to go for a stroll to try and wear myself out. It doesn’t always work, but at least it keeps me fit.
