Trench Shelters

If I have in my kit in these cold winter months a rectangular sheet, at least nine feet long by whatever-I-reckon-is-useful wide, I can put it to use now to make a snow shelter with much less difficulty (Figures 5:12 & 5:13).

First I gather the heap of snow, but now I need just enough that my heap is a good three feet deep and covers an area of six feet by twelve feet. I let the snow set while I gather brush and perhaps some fuel for a fire and then I take a huge leaping step into the middle of the heap and work around myself to make a trench nine feet long by three feet wide. It should be three feet deep at what will be the entrance end of my shelter, but perhaps only two feet deep throughout the remainder where the sleeping platform will be. I end up standing in my trench, of course.
