Acherman and Anne Cohen prepared dinner together and afterwards formulated a statement to the press for next morning. This took a few minutes as there wasn’t much to say and the rest of the evening they talked about Rosen’s machine and its method of uncovering the codes. The last topic, which they both colluded in raising as a diversion from the sombre aspect of the codes and their terrible predictions, was the spate of rumours about disaster that was washing round the media in the wake of speculation about global warming, the latest being a scare thrown up by a down-market mid-western rag called the Oklahoma Chronicle about the approach of a huge asteroid on course to destroy life on the planet down to bacterial level in the rock when it hit.
