SEPTEMBER 1941

Lydia

At her new high school, Lydia effortlessly made friends and boys chased her around the playground. Someone asked if her previous school had been strict.

‘Strict?’ Lydia considered the question. She had not noticed if it was. If it was, it had nothing to do with her. Lydia did her own thing. If there were rules she liked, she kept to them, and if she did not like them, she did not.

At the new school, there were several children from her old school in London. About half of the evacuees had gone back, but the other half had stayed. Another child asked her if she was Valerie’s sister.

‘Do we look like sisters?!’

Lydia wasn’t insulted – the girl obviously didn’t mean it as an insult – but she could easily have been. Valerie was quick-witted and she no longer looked washed out, but she was no Miss Picard’s ‘chérie’. You wouldn’t say she was pretty as a picture.

Despite sharing a house, Lydia and Valerie didn’t spend a lot of time together. Valerie was usually stationed in the library, listening to shows on the wireless. Lydia thought she could be attractive if she tried, but she didn’t. If anything, she tried the opposite. Valerie also had no interest in material things. You could dangle some gold-plated candlesticks in front of her and her eyes wouldn’t light up; she wouldn’t care about the price or the metal, although she would probably ask about its history.
