CHAPTER

_ 31

MÜNSTER PLATZ, BASEL, SWITZERLAND– ONE HOUR LATER

The sun was finally beginning to drop through a thin layer of clouds over Basel when Dylan and Abby emerged from the subway station and out onto Münsterplatz, the city’s largest and most historic square. Abby, whose fatigue was beginning to overwhelm her, raised her face to the cool breeze while taking in their new surroundings of centuries-old buildings and the twin spires of a towering cathedral.

“You know, Dylan,” she said in a weary voice, “I’m going to have to come back here someday. A day when I can fully appreciate the beauty of this place.”

“I know,” he said. “I feel the same way. Right now, though, all I can think about is watching the cars and looking for our contact. Thank goodness Jeeps aren’t common in Switzerland. Ah! Look—there he is.”

Abby followed his gaze and, sure enough, there alongside the cathedral’s far wall sat an older model Jeep Wrangler with fat tires. By the time her eyes had processed the sight, Dylan was halfway there.

As Dylan spoke with the owner, a middle-aged bearded man, she hung back and waited. At one point she looked away, scanning the crowded plaza, and nearly screamed out loud.

Her Sight was back, and in full force! Her view of well-dressed Europeans strolling about the beautiful plaza now included glowing white warriors grappling with pools of black, which, when her eye could settle on their writhing forms, resolved into hideous imitations of human and animal forms. She heard angelic shouts, deep and powerful, and demonic growls that seemed to rumble through her insides like an earthquake. She saw a black body strike the ground and dissolve into the earth. Then another. Then, in a blaze of light, an angel tossed high into the air by an unusually large strongman.

“No . . . please, God,” she whispered, closing her eyes. “Take this from me. Please let me get my strength back.” Then it occurred to her that she might be praying wrongly. She started again. “Please give me the strength for this, if it’s your will . . .”

She opened her eyes and looked around again. She saw Dylan climb into the Jeep and heard the engine start. While revving the motor, Dylan poked his head out the window and waved for her to come. The seller was walking away now, stuffing a wad of bills into his shirt pocket.

And that was when she noticed it. The path between them was lined with angels standing shoulder to shoulder, smiling at her. The love and assurance emanating from their features caused her to fight back tears as she dashed toward Dylan.

“It’s got some age, but it’s in good shape,” he told her as she climbed inside. “Perfect for us.”

She sighed, leaning back against the headrest. “Dylan, I need to get some sleep,” she said softly.

“Sure,” he said while speeding away. “I’m going to drive us as far from all this attention as I can. There’s not much of a back seat, but you might be able to curl up back there, if you want.
