On March 17, 1525, Mühlhausen rose up, mere days after Müntzerâs arrival. He had not wanted this rebellion, which came too soon. But thatâs how facts are, they happen when they happen. Müntzer resigned himself. Since the revolt had started, he proclaimed, âStir it up in the villages and especially amongst the miners and other good fellows who will be useful. We must sleep no longer.â He encouraged Balthasar, Barthel Krump, Valentin, and Bischof to lead the way. The heart must become larger than all the castles, more solid than all the armor. Time to strike, while the iron is hot. âOn, on, onwards!â he cried. âAs long as they live, it is not possible to be emptied of the fear of man. You can be told nothing about God as long as they rule over you. On, onwards, while you have daylight. God marches before you, so follow, follow!â
At that point, Kurt von Tütcheroda joins him, Heinrich Hack joins him, Christoph von Altendorf joins him. And he writes letter upon letter; his is initially a war of words. Thomas Müntzer knows how to put pen to paper. Thereâs something lively and fateful about him, an aroused hatred, a wicked turn of mind, but also gentleness. Nietzsche secretly took inspiration from him, from the Müntzeresque gush and extravagance. But Müntzer is a man of action; he gets carried along by his own prose. He does not despise the commoner, the ordinary man. Müntzer is daffodil and thistle, nettle and sap. He quotes Daniel: âPower will be given to the people.â Weâre a long way from Nietzsche.
