Chapter 26
Anticipation
McKenzie awoke at ten thirty the following morning. She threw on some sweats, took the elevator down to the ground level, and began the two-block journey to Starbucks to pick up coffee and a newspaper. What was Jackson doing right now? Just the thought of him made her happy.
Back in her apartment, she opened the Hartford Courant and searched for a review of the show. She couldnât find one. Then she went online and retrieved a review on the Courantâs website. The reviewer had liked it as well.
It had been a wonderful evening. Her lips pursed. What would it have been like to kiss Jackson? Soft and sweet? Or needy and passionate? Monica would have an opinion. She should be up by now. So, McKenzie grabbed her phone and texted her: You up yet?
The response came within seconds: Yep.
McKenzie called her and set her phone on speaker. âHey.â
âSo howâd it go last night? Inquiring minds want to know.â
She leaned on the countertop and gazed out over Downtown Hartford, smiling. âHeâs so nice. It was the best date Iâve ever had.â
âNice? Did you invite him up to your apartment?â
âOf course not. It was only a first date.â McKenzie rolled her eyes. âBesides, heâs a Baptist, so he probably isnât into that sort of thing right away.â
âBaptist? Maybe youâd better lose him then, babe. Not your type.â
McKenzie sat on one of the barstools at the island. âNormally, he wouldnât be. But thereâs something different about him. In a way, I wish I wasnât so attracted to him.â
âWhy?â
âIt was so much easier to dump him before because of his drinking, but heâs changed. Heâs got all these off-the-wall ideas about God and evolution and that kind of stuff, and it bugs me. Itâs against everything I ever learned in school. On the other hand, heâs so nice and respectful that I love being around him.â She sighed. âI think heâs the nicest man Iâve ever met.â
âThatâs something coming from you, Miss Picky. Iâm happy for you.â
âWell, letâs see what happens.â
âHas he ever been married?â Monica asked.
âI donât know. I donât think so, but I didnât get around to asking Jackson about past loves yet.â
âDo you think heâs Mr. Right?â
McKenzie sniffed. âYouâre unbelievable.â
âCome on. You can tell me. Iâm waiting.â
âI donât know. Maybe.â
âDid he say he would call you?â
âHe said heâd give me a call to do something again soon.â
âSounds promising. When do I get to meet him?â
âWhatâs the hurry?â
âWeâve been waiting a long time for you to meet a guy like this. Iâm so excited for you.â
*
The Sunday morning service had just ended when Jackson spotted Mike Tolbert among the crowd in the lobby. Heâd just learned that Mikeâs mom had died from a heart attack a week ago. âHey, Mike. Iâm so sorry to hear about your mom.â They shook hands. âHow are you doing?â
âAll right. It was a shock, her passing so suddenly. I had just talked with her a few days earlier. I guess you never know when your time is up.
