8 HORROR EFFECTS

This is the first of the chapters that will relate directly to a genre. Horror as a whole has always relied on low budgets and various effects. Bigger budget horror films somehow seem to find a way of just not working well, mainly because they are either copying too much or slicking up too much.

Now as much as we the proponents of digital special effects might try to talk directors out of corn syrup and red food coloring, there is something that can be said for effects that work. However, lo-tech solutions such as a fake blood recipe can be enhanced greatly using computers to fix some pretty big problems.

In the 2000s we have seen a shift back to the 1970s ultra-low budget splatter film, sometimes referred to as “torture porn.” With all this need for blood splatters, mutant faces, and dismemberment, it is more important than ever for indie-horror filmmakers to utilize the time- and budget-saving techniques covered in this chapter.

One of my favorite examples is from when I first started teaching, a student who confronted me with some horror film production problems. He had an issue with very expensive contact lenses, designed to give his cast members monster-esque eyes. Rather than blow a small fortune on props, there are great VFX solutions to issues like this.
