CHAPTER 16

“Mariana, mi amor, has llenado mi corazón. Me ha dejado tan ligero y sintiendo calor.”

Hope sang the tune again softly as she prepared for bed. The room was as humble as the rest of the cottage, but it was comfortable, and she appreciated Reeves allowing her to stay, despite the fact that he had not expected her, nor, according to Anthony, was he usually comfortable with strangers. She turned back the blankets and was about to snuggle between them when there was a light knock on the door. Her heartrate increased as she walked toward it, knowing who she would find on the other side.

“Anthony,” she said softly when she found him standing there. He had been running his hands through his hair for the majority of the evening while studying the books, and it was rather dishevelled now, hanging down around his forehead. He had already removed his jacket, cravat, and waistcoat, and Hope decided she rather liked how he looked in only his trousers and linen shirt, a few buttons open at the collar.

“I was hoping to catch you before you retired for the night,” he said, stepping backward, actually appearing somewhat hesitant. “But if you are in need of sleep—”

“It’s fine,” she said, opening the door wider. “Will Reeves be scandalized to know you are in here?”

“I can hear his snores from the hall,” he said with a small chuckle. “We should be fine.”

Once he was within the room, he paced slowly back and forth, and Hope sat on a corner of the bed, waiting patiently for him to get to the point he was here to make.

“What do you think it means?”

Hope tried to push away the disappointment that filled her at his words. She hadn’t realized how much she had been hoping that he was here to see her – and for more reasons than to talk about this never-ending clue.

“Mariana, my love, has filled my heart. She has left me so light and feeling warmth, is essentially what it means,” she murmured. “It’s a love song, about the love a man has for a woman,” she said. “It begins with him believing that he cannot have her, but in the end they find a way to be together.”

“A happy love song. How rare,” he said.

“I prefer happy songs.”

“I am baffled as to how the song can have anything to do with this treasure hunt,” he said, and Hope tapped a finger against her lips.

“I have an idea, actually.”

“You do?” he said, spinning around quickly, and Hope had to hold back her smile at the excitement that covered his face. He was so sullen most of the time that when he did show another emotion, it was far more fulfilling to see.

“I do,” she confirmed. “What if it is not the words of the song, but the notes?”

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe together in a sequence they will provide a pattern, one that could lead to us solving the clue,” she said, twisting her hands together as she wondered whether he would think that her idea was foolish.
