Jessie’s knees were still knocking by the time they made it back to her place. What she’d witnessed had been both thrilling and terrifying. And it had shaken her to her core. Cabe and Gloria could have both plummeted to their death and the thought of that...

He’d looked done in too, and who could blame him. He’d done all the work. If they hadn’t been there, how long would it have taken for help to get there? Sure, Doug had gotten there within about fifteen minutes, but Cabe was already almost at the top by the time he arrived.

She directed him to the sofa and urged him to sit down.

“I’m fine,” he said.

Dumble evidently had to get his two cents’ worth in, because he started in immediately. “Not the only one. Not the only one.”

He’d been repeating that phrase almost nonstop for the last week, and she had no idea where it had come from. When he caught sight of the dog, he gave his whistle and said, “Good doggy.”

When she turned to glance at Cabe he was making a face at the bird. “Sorry. I know he’s annoying.”

“No, he’s fine.”

“I’ll be right back. I’m going to give Rocky something to eat and drink.”

Once she set two bowls on the floor, the dog immediately drank. So far she seemed perfectly fine, settling in to eat the food.

Going back into the living room to ask Cabe what he wanted to eat, she glanced at him. “Oh! Your butterflies have come off.”

It was almost a week, but evidently the sweat and exertion had decided to do the rest of the job.

Moving closer, she examined the dirt-streaked skin, surprised when he didn’t try to brush her away. “It looks good. I think it’ll do.”

Warm fingers curled around the nape of her neck. “Thanks for sticking around.”

“Where else would I be?”

“You could have left.”

A sense of mirth went through her. “You took the car keys with you. I’d have had to hot-wire your car, something else I know nothing about.”

His thumb took a slow, treacherous course, moving from just behind her ear all the way down her neck. “Is that the only reason why you stuck around?”

“No,” she whispered, realizing it was true. Nothing could have dragged her from that dome while he was up there fighting for someone’s life. It had moved her in a way she didn’t understand. Didn’t want to examine.

Before she had time to analyze her thoughts anymore, his lips came up and caught hers, pressing tiny kisses all along her bottom lip, before sucking it into his mouth. The sensation sent fiery signals along her nerve endings, obliterating everything in their path.

The shock of seeing that rescue unfold in living color and the reality that he could have been killed at any point during it still hung in the foggy areas of her mind. She’d been so scared. And then after the woman was lowered and whisked away, Cabe had hung out on those jagged rocks for several minutes not moving.
