Chapter Twelve

Night Train

Sarah glanced from her place on the cobblestone street, which was washed yellow in the early evening by the line of gas street lamps. She searched the shadows of the building rooftops above her for the large form of the Spider, waiting there for her instruction. Evangeline had been very explicit. The three of them needed to make it down to the train platforms under the university, but traveling with Mr. Třínožka and Edwin was going to make it rather difficult, having to remain unseen by the on-looking, human eyes around the city.

Sarah had swiped a few articles of Charlotte’s old clothes from their crumpled place on the floor of the Regime Palace chamber. She tried to think of every detail. Being out and about among the mortals of Prague, she wanted to blend in as much as possible. Glancing down at herself, she thought she’d achieved that pretty well with the frumpy skirt, the cable-knit sweater she could have made herself, though a zillion times better, and the flat brown boots, which looked at least twenty years old. Distantly, Sarah pondered over where Charlotte got all her old clothes—the ones Sarah didn’t give her from her own wardrobe. She shuddered to think any of these articles were off the dead bodies of Charlotte’s unknowing victims she fed to Valek.

A whistle sounded from somewhere above her. She spun on her heels, gazing upwards, searching for the source of the sound, until finally her eyes landed on the silhouette of the giant Spider-man. And something that looked like a deformation on his back, which she knew was Edwin because it started waving broadly at her. Sarah blushed, suddenly very conscious of the humans moving on the street around her.

“Shhh!” she hissed very abruptly. One of the mortals stopped to look at her, probably for the rudeness of the sound, or perhaps they even thought she was a crazy old crow. However, she ignored them and dropped her gaze from the rooftops. She went on about scouring her surroundings. The entryway to the underground train system near the main, historical building of Charles University was what the Bone Mother had told her to search for. They were in the general area, the old building staring back at her from across the courtyard. At this hour, it looked closed and dismal in the middle of the otherwise-bustling city.

A few modern cars began to roll up to a very grand-looking theater across the street. All of the golden lights around the place were lit, especially those along the wide stairway, making the building look like it was on fire. The cars were sleek. Black. The mortals that emerged were rather important-looking, elegantly dressed for the evening’s events. Sarah watched them gallivant with each other, other, lesser-important humans flocking around to watch the spectacle. Some of them were even snapping photographs. It was wondrous, the hierarchy their mundane life had. Even among beings deemed the lowliest, the least divine, there were those who considered themselves so entirely important.
