Make the Call

Write down the names of three people who you enjoy talking to but haven’t talked to in a few weeks, months, or even years.

Give them a call to catch up. If you feel awkward, you can always say, “We haven’t talked in a while, and I just want to say hi, and see what’s going on in your life.” Check off their name after the call, but remember, you can always call again in the future.

Dealing With Negative Judgments

Do you find yourself annoyed when other people talk to you, or think they’re probably full of themselves, or that they aren’t worth talking to? That creates its own set of problems. The more critical you are of others, the more likely you are to feel that others are critical of you. That’s because the medial prefrontal region that we use to understand our own mind is the same region used to understand other people’s minds, and it’s influenced by the emotional limbic system. Thus, one of the best ways to reduce your concern about the negative judgments and criticisms of other people is to reduce your own negative judgment and criticism.

Being judgmental can be especially damaging in close relationships, so it’s helpful to be aware of it. Do you notice yourself being critical of others, particularly people you’re close to? How does that impact how you feel about them or yourself?
