12. Play Time
D eb smiled as she pulled up next to Titusâs truck at the hotel. They would soon move in, and it already felt like home. They now occupied four houses back at her place, which was absolute chaos. It had taken Titus and Chris a lot longer to prepare the hotel than anticipated, but she didnât begrudge them that delay. She was aware of how hard they worked and how guilty they felt about the time it took. But, like everyone, she was finding the wait increasingly difficult to bear. I want to move in now her mind cried.
Deb paused when she entered the building, listening. She couldnât hear any noises to give away Titus and Chrisâs location. Though she wasnât surprised, given the size of the hotel. She walked over to the stairwell entrance and listened again. Then she heard it: the faint, satisfying sound of a hammer far away. She began climbing the carpeted stairs in the dark, feeling her way up and keeping a solid grip on the metal banister. The intermittent hammering sounds grew louder until she reached the fourth floor. A dim sliver of light seeped out from under the door marked with a large white â4â. A small square viewing window also threw some faint sunlight into the stairwell.
She peered through the window and saw Titus moving a dolly with two large doors on it. He paused in front of one of the rooms on the right and lifted another door onto the dolly. The bulging of his muscles told Deb how heavy the doors were. The hammering noises continued from inside one room, though Deb couldnât tell which it was.
âWould go a lot faster with a little help,â he bellowed. Deb winced at his tone.
The hammering further down the hall stopped long enough for a brusque reply. âBusy here, you wanted the doors gone, not me.â
Enough spying , she thought, and pulled the fire escape door open.
âDeb!â called Titus, without his usual smile. âComing to check up on your workforce?â
âOf course I am. I half expected to find the two of you sharing a six pack.â
âHardly,â he replied, with a grim look.
Chris popped his head out of the third room on the right.
âI was thinking that either Titus had started talking to himself, again, or we have a visitor. Iâm glad to see itâs the latter. How are you, Deb?â
âIâm fine, Iâm fine, I thought itâd be nice to see how the place is shaping up. I havenât been here since that first day Titus and I found it.â
âItâs coming along, but weâd be done by now if I had decent help,â Titus said.
âIâm not your helper, canât you get that through your head? And itâs this stupid door idea of yours that made us late, not me. Iâm not getting any help doing the important work.â
âGentlemen, please!â Deb held out her hands between them. âI wanted you to work out your differences on your own. Clearly it hasnât happened. But this really has to stop.
