CHAPTER SEVEN
"We've got to stop meeting like this, Tom." He tried to smile.
So did Tom. "I agree."
He took a drink. "What have you got?"
"A woman in her mid-thirties and her son, eleven, were killed in their home. I don't know anything other than that. The officer I spoke to said it fit the profile we sent out and called us in."
The hour-long drive was silent save for the moments when the police scanner broke in with directions to the scene or small bits of information that came in. Jasper was pretty sure he knew what the general crime scene was, and he wished he didn't.
They pulled into the driveway of a small farmhouse. If the police cars and officers were ignored, then it would have been as picturesque as Norman Rockwell. The house was painted fresh white with dark blue trim and a wide front porch that overlooked a wide, grassy yard interspersed with thick oak trees. Most of the leaves had fallen, and a wind that promised winter rattled through the remaining brittle leaves that still clung to the branches.
Local police officers stood in groups with the officers that Tom worked with and had chosen for the case. Yellow police tape crossed the open back door. Jasper and Tom got out of the car and were greeted by Seth as he ran over to them.
"You have a chance to get inside yet?" Tom looked toward the house.
Seth nodded. "I just had a quick look before you got here."
"What do you think?"
He sighed. "Despite all the blood on the floor, there isn't one footprint."
Another unmarked police car pulled onto the grass and parked. Brett and two other officers climbed out. They joined the small circle around Tom.
Tom ran his hand through his thinning hair. "Seth, head on in with Jasper and Brett."
He nodded, and the trio headed towards the house. If anyone thought it was odd that Tom was sending in a rookie into a high-profile and quick-moving serial killer case, they didn't voice it. Tom never did anything without reason. That was something that anyone who ever worked with him knew. Tom glanced over at the group of his officers before he went towards the house to speak with the two local officers that first discovered the scene. Jasper, Brett, and Seth ducked under the police tape and stepped inside.
The kitchen was homeyâthe type of kitchen that often smelled of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies or warm bread. The type of room that people spend more time in than the living room It was simple and inviting, with a theme of apples tastefully scattered throughout the room and small details that reflected how happy the family must have been. Two of the chairs that surrounded a scrubbed wood table had been overturned. Half-washed dishes sat abandoned in the sink. A carton of milk sat open on the counter, an empty glass at its side.
In the center of the wood-patterned linoleum, a woman lay like an island in a sea of her own blood.
