“I think we both know I have no choice,” I said, tossing the note into the air, watching the glow from the burning edges until it disintegrated to ash.

A chill had settled into the air as we stepped from the dark castle for the first time since arriving weeks ago. All Hallows Eve was a time for rebirth, as much as it was a time to say goodbye to the past. It was a day to manifest and a day to celebrate. To eat, drink, dance around a bonfire and laugh with family and friends. But it started with Grey taking most of the space in my carriage once again as we headed over the king's bridge and back to the Moon Coven territory.

“You look nothing like him.”

I shifted in my seat, bringing my feet up onto the bench as I rotated to face him.

He smirked, showing that infamous dimple. “We're cousins. And of course, we don't look alike. I'm prettier.”

I laughed. “Are you? Cousins? Which side?”

Grey rolled his eyes. “I'm a witch, aren't I?”

“Yes, but ...”

“It's not uncommon for the Fire Coven witches to fall in love with the shifters. Years ago, our territory was full of lush grass and towering trees. Things have changed since then, but we've always been a peaceful coven.”

I shook my head. “I don't understand. I've always thought most of the Fire Coven was unfriendly. They don't attend gatherings. I only know one that visits the shop and isn't too good to be seen in our territory. The king hardly even sits on the council.”

“It's different for him,” he said, twisting in his seat to get more comfortable as the carriage bumped along the road. “He's the king and the Fire Coven leader. He has a lot to juggle. And the other covens haven't been very welcoming since ...”

My breath caught as I realized what he was trying to say, but stopped himself because of last time. “The Grimoires?”

“Yes. But even before that. Since Eden Mossbrook went missing and Endora convinced the rest of the leaders that it was Bastian's father that orchestrated it. Murdering her and stealing the book.”

“Can we not?” I reached for his hand. “We're never going to agree on this topic, and I want to keep the peace between us. Can we let this go for today?”

He shook his head. “Of all the Chosen, I thought for sure you'd be the exception. If not to believe, at least not to blindly follow.”

I opened my mouth to retort, but he held up a hand. “In the spirit of the holiday, I'll stop. I want you to have a great time today and tell me all about it when you come back.”

Something occurred to me then. Grey was a cousin to the Dark King. He'd spent every day I'd been there within the walls. He'd only left when ordered. I narrowed my eyes. “Have you ever been to an All Hallows Eve festival?”

“No.”

“Not even with the Fire Coven?”

“No. I've grown up in the castle and when you are in the presence of the king, the kingdom comes before the coven, always.
