âHe is in bed now, my Lady.â
Julianna turned her head to look at the maid who had stepped into the parlor.
âAwake?â
âI couldnât say, my Lady.â
âAnd the Physician?â
âHe has been sent for, but the messenger has not returned as yet, my Lady.â The maid bit her lip then dropped her head. âIt is so very cold and there is so much snow thatâ¦â Trailing off, she said nothing more, but Julianna understood exactly what it was that she meant. If the messenger had not yet returned, then the chances of the Physician making it to the townhouse with any speed were few and far between.
Which meant that it would be up to her to look after Lord Wileham.
âVery well.â Taking a deep breath, she set her shoulders and marched towards the door. âThen I will go to him at once.â Her face heated as she paused, looking at the maid. âHis clothes?â
âAre being washed at present, my Lady. The butler has seen that Lord Wileham is dressed in something clean and dry.â
âAnd he is presentable?â
âYes, my Lady.â
With a nod, Julianna made her way out of the parlor without another word, finding herself almost breaking into a run as she mounted the stairs to the bedrooms above. There had been no question of Lord Wileham being brought here â she would not have stood for anything else. She could not have had the coachman take him back to his own townhouse, for the snow was much too strong and she had no assurance that he would be able to take him home and thereafter, return her to the townhouse safely. Thankfully, her servants had worked quickly, and without even a word of surprise over the situation, with both the butler and the housekeeper making certain that everything went smoothly. Julianna had retired to the parlor until he had been changed and was able to rest, but she had done nothing but pace up and down the room, waiting for news of his condition.
Pausing outside the door, Julianna closed her eyes, drew in strength, and then stepped inside. There was only one maid present, setting out a blanket by the fire so it might warm a little before she placed it on the bed. Julianna nodded to her, but then returned her attention to Lord Wileham, her heart in her throat as she drew closer to the bed.
Lord Wileham was white-faced, his eyes were closed and there were deep shadows beneath them. His chest rose and fell but, aside from that, there was no sign of life. Tears began to burn again in Juliannaâs eyes, but she steeled herself with an effort, refusing to let them fall. Tears and upset would not help Lord Wileham and, even though at this moment she felt both helpless and distraught, such emotions would have to be set to the side if she was to help him.
âThe tea-tray?â
The maid turned at once and brought it over, from where it had been sitting on a small table near the fire, before setting it down next to Julianna.
