Chapter 15

A splash of color caught John's eye, so he paused. A tattered comic book was laying on the road as the group kept walking. Picking it up, he laughed to himself. Batman! He smiled, flipping through the pages.

He, and the rest of the surviving Witnesses, were adamant about not looking at the destruction around them. It was the only way they were going to make it through the entire ordeal, while retaining an ounce of sanity. But seeing the sun faded comic, pushed John to scan the wreckage around him. Perhaps he could figure out how it came to be discarded out in the middle of nowhere. He turned around and looked at a little yellow car that had been slashed, burnt, and mangled into garbage. Inside the crumpled metal shell, was the decaying remains of a family. Bones wearing clothes, all crusted with black blood spots. John was grateful that the wild animals and birds had miraculously picked away most of the deceased's flesh, but what was left behind was almost as traumatic to look upon. I really, really shouldn't have looked.

John was being glared at by brother Norris as he returned, still holding the magazine. He tried to ignore him, as he admired the illustrations. Norris cleared his throat obnoxiously, making John sigh. “What? It's Batman, It's awesome. I'm just looking through it.”

“You have a bad habit of looking at things you shouldn't.” Norris grumbled. “You are only making this harder for yourself, John.” He looked up and motioned with his hands the way he always did before quoting scripture. “First John, chapter two, verse fifteen says... If anyone loves the world, the love of the father is not in him, because everything in the world, the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, and the showy display of one's means of life, does not originate with the father, but originates with the world. Furthermore, the world is passing away and so is its desire, but the one who does the will of god remains forever.”

“I know...” John reluctantly tossed the booklet to the ground. “I hope one day we can have our own comic books, you know, not worldly ones.”

Norris looked at him funny. “What would be depicted?”

“It could be the same kind of stuff, only not worldly. Like superheros and stuff.”

“Well, Jehovah hates violence and does not want us to put any figure on a pedestal, besides him. That could be a little too close to idolatry, John.”

“So, we will never have comic books again?” His pace slowed as they walked.

“Well now, I didn't say that. Maybe there will be comic books based on real heroes, like Sampson, King David, or Jesus. That would be fun, wouldn't it?”

“Yeah, it would be cool to see a comic on David. He killed a bear, a giant, and won so many battles with the sword!”

“Um, John. I think you're missing the point. If any
