The railways were central to Britain’s war plans and the investments that had seen so many improvements during the 1930s would soon pay many unexpected dividends. But the glamorous express services that had seemed so important a few years earlier now appeared to be an unnecessary extravagance for a country soon to be plunged into wartime austerity. Good, strong, reliable engines were essential, but anything falling short of this standard would be stripped away. Very quickly it was decided that Turbomotive, with her poor maintenance record and lack of readily available spares, could not be kept in service and within days of war being declared was mothballed; it was condemned to the Paint Shop at Crewe, while awaiting a decision about her future. Few expected to see her re-enter service.
