âOh, God, what time is it?â Wanda asked in a panicked voice.
âItâs still very early,â Konstantin answered. âFive oâclock. What are you frightened of?â
âThe children could wake up. Itâs already late. When did you wake up?â
âAbout fifteen minutes ago. I just watched you sleep. Youâre so beautiful. Youâre like a goddess. I love you madly. Tell me, do you love me?â
âOnly last night you told me silence is consent.â
âNo, I want to hear it. Itâs important to me to hear it.â
âYes, I love you. Youâre my last love. This is not just love. I believe this is something more.â
âThatâs all I want to know. I will love you with all my heart and soul. I will do anything for you. My heart belongs to you. Youâre my wellspring, my oasis.â
âI donât understand what youâre talking about. You have a family. How can you manage?â
âWe can talk about that later. But now I want to make love to you again.â
Wanda did not think about his family anymore. She gave herself to him.
It was Sunday morning. The children woke up and were ready for breakfast. Konstantin had left before they awakened. Wanda had breakfast with them. She felt tired, but happy. She did not know what her future with Konstantin would be. She knew only that she was happy with him. She was thirty-nine years old, but she felt much younger. Masha was eleven and Gregory was seven. Life had smiled on her one more time, and she understood it was the best thing that could happen to her. In her memory, she saw her past. When Tadeush was gone, Vladimir came into her life. When Vladimir was gone, Grisha came into her life. Now, when Grisha and his mother died, Kostya came.
âI believe it is Godâs will,â she thought, âthat I not be alone. I have to accept life as it is.â
Everything would be so wonderful if Kostya were free. But now, I donât know what will happen.â
She sighed deeply because she knew she could decide nothing alone.
