CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Tom kept his breathing steady while pretending to sleep until the doctors and nurses exited the room. It took everything he had not to jump out of his hospital bed the moment he saw December being wheeled in, but he knew they would try and stop him.

From his position he could see the side of her face as she laid flat in the bed opposite his. He listened to her breathing through her oxygen mask and the beeping sounds of the heart rate and blood pressure monitors.

Tom took a deep, painful breath and forced himself into a sitting position. He could see her eyes were closed now, with several intravenous drips connected to her arm. Tom groaned when he put pressure on his sprained ankle but it wasn’t enough to slow him down as he hobbled to December’s bedside.

He stared down at her unconscious face framed by a cloud of honey-brown hair; her pupils moved rapidly as she dreamt. He caressed her cheek and slowly sat down at the side of the bed.

“Sweetheart, I’m so sorry. I should have listened to you. We should still be in that hotel room snuggled up, ordering room service. We could still do that, in fact. On Valentine’s Day, we could be locked away all safe and sound in a hotel room, binge watching The Mindy Project...doesn’t that sounds great? If you open your eyes right now, I’ll even watch that Cinderella movie with Whitney Houston in it that you love so much. Just open your eyes, my love. Or squeeze my hand...please.” He took her small hands in his and brought it to his lips.

Tom punctuated each tender kiss of her hand with a mournful ‘please’ until his mouth ran dry and his eyes burned from crying.

Finally, Tom shifted on her bed until he lay down beside her, grateful for the painkillers that made moving around somewhat bearable. He gently pecked her cheek.

“Marry me, December. Wake up, say yes, and marry me. Make me the happiest man in the universe. We can go to Tiffany’s and pick out a ring. Any ring you want.” Tom whispered against her temple.

The heart rate monitor’s beeping sped up, much faster than the steady rhythm Tom had grown used to. He panicked as December’s body began to thrash about. He quickly started pressing the call button for the nurse’s station, and bellowed for help

“You scared me the life out of me. Look, I have several gray hairs now because of you.” Tom complained, all the while covering her face in kisses.

“Well, I didn’t know I had a feeding tube down my throat.” December rasped, her throat still raw.

They had found out the hard way that regaining consciousness was very dramatic when you had something lodged in your esophagus. Nothing was more frightening than seeing a loved one’s body convulsing and feeling completely helpless, which was how Tom felt, when he was pushed out of the way when the doctors and nurses burst through the hospital room doors.
