Chapter 21

As the three sparkling brides floated down the aisle, Sara firmly kept all thoughts of her own wedding out of her mind. She knew the basics about her own now—namely the identities of the bride and groom. The key elements. The bride element hadn’t been a problem, the identity of the groom is what had given her trouble over the years.

It appeared other people’s weddings were the place where women dreamed of their own.

She flushed at these thoughts and instead watched as Katy and Leo made eyes at each other. He was hopelessly ensnared, and judging from Katy’s body language, she gladly joined him in this.

As soon as the three women reached the front they separated to stand with their grooms. The two bridesmaids straightened trains and then stepped back, behind and to either side of the main participants. Two additional men had come out with the grooms but she didn’t know either.

The man marrying them began the proceedings and Sara enjoyed the short ceremony. Even though three couples had to repeat their vows, it didn’t stretch into boring. Although she guessed Clay had zoned out long ago.

She gently squeezed his hand, as he had taken possession of hers the moment they sat. Sara liked his tendency to hold her hand. All around them, other couples, mostly his family, also held hands, from the oldest there, to those newer couples like Tia and Aleksi. From what she gathered, Tia was only newly married.

The weddings contained no pomp and circumstance, despite the beautiful marble ballroom. Plenty of love and some passion flowed when the grooms kissed their brides. Leo displayed a lot of satisfaction as he escorted his new wife down the aisle. With Katy’s hand tucked in his arm, he looked smug, happy, and content.

All three brides glowed, and they all seemed rather pleased the actual ceremony was over. The bridal party exited for the inevitable pictures, while the guests were ushered to the side of the room. Servers set up round tables for the guests to eat at and several square ones to hold the buffet lunch. Three cakes presided on the cake table, displayed beautifully with fresh flowers. Each cake boasted three tiers, and an abundance of fall flowers. She and Clay meandered over there and she snapped several photos with her phone.

The servers set up an hors d’oeuvre table and supplied plenty of yummy things to snack on while they waited for the bridal party to return. The ballroom had been decorated in typical wedding fashion, but in a tasteful manner. Potted trees added greenery to the room, and a few urns spilled with colorful flowers.

Each round table was adorned in the usual white linens, along with a low floral arrangement and candles, as well as the wedding favors. “This is nice.”

Clay slanted a glance at her. “Right.”

“You’ve been to enough of them to know.”

“I’m a man.”

“Right, you’d rather skip the wedding.”

He shuddered. “Yes.”

“Don’t even think about it,” she warned.

His sigh held a note of long-suffering.
