SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY

Sensorimotor psychotherapy (SP), developed and evolving since the 1980s by Pat Ogden, is a “body-oriented talking therapy” that intentionally integrates psychotherapy and body therapy (Ogden et al., 2006). SP helps clients stabilize, release, and heal the physiological symptoms of trauma, attachment failure, grief and loss, and developmental arrest by using a wide range of somatic interventions woven seamlessly into the psychotherapeutic process. SP emphasizes the need of the client to maintain a neurophysiological window of tolerance between hyper-and hypoarousal of the nervous system, in order for verbal interventions to be effective. SP is intentional in its differential use of “top-down” (cognition initiated) and “bottom-up” (sensory initiated) interventions to help the client maintain and expand that window. Also stressed is the role of physical movement, stillness, or collapse in symptom formation, and therapeutic use of physical movement and stillness in the healing process.
