Chapter 9

Eden typed in a finishing sentence on the last case brief in her final semester in law school and sighed with relief at being done with it. It was an easy case, poignant, but unusual. It involved one Emilio Miguel Bravo accused of illegally acquiring a controlled substance…marijuana…for personal use. The simple details of the case were not in error or question, but the state failed to take into consideration the what, why, and how of Emilio’s need to break the law. English as a second language aside, he’d confessed that he knew exactly what he was doing was wrong but had no choice. After reading his deposition and checking on the District’s current laws involving the legality of marijuana, Eden had to agree with Emilio’s reasoning. Now she only had to find the loopholes in the law and argue the penalties.

Was it worth the risk of jail to provide relief for his wife of fifty years for her sometimes debilitating migraines? A storefront pharmacy, often used by immigrants ignorant and fearful of the established medical field, had told Emilio that marijuana was very good for migraines. Hence, his willingness to break the law and pay shady neighborhood dealers to provide the remedy in gummy form for his wife. And it worked. Emilio was swept up in the drug bust that jailed his supplier. To make his story even more interesting, it was a Latino police officer who steered him to Center City where Eden and a few of her fellow classmates handled the kind of cases that normally got swept under the rug.

It was challenging, but she found she enjoyed questioning the logic of established systems that kept doing things the way they’d always done things. And an if ain’t broke, don’t fix it attitude didn’t work with human beings.

“Eden, I’m never going to forget what you’re doing for us.”

Nacine, a stunning beauty originally from Iran, stood in front of Eden looking like she was going to burst with excitement. “I want to thank you not only for thinking of this amazing treat for everyone, but for actually volunteering to pay for it. Why would you do that?”

Eden shrugged. “When you all get fabulous jobs making tons of money and I’m slogging away at a not-for-profit, you can treat me to something. For now, a thank you is enough.”

“I heard that,” Brianna shouted from across the lounge area. She had taken over not just a corner of the long, overstuffed sofa, but the entire sofa, her papers and books spread around her. “Don’t mind me if I don’t get up to grovel at your feet but, grrrl, this is the bomb! If you have a sugar daddy no one knew about, thank him for me.”

Eden and Nacine joined in the laughter with Brianna. And Eden was glad that she’d thought of this way to get the team focused. They were all on an eleventh-hour push to the finish line before graduation. Even Zach. As Brianna and Nacine settled
