Steel jerked his hand out of Ketrick’s grasp and struggled for breath. Ketrick’s face reddened, and he whirled on Lucas.

“Why did you show him that last part?” Spit flew from Ketrick’s lips.

“It is necessary,” Lucas said.

Steel was reeling from the memory. The image of the mother he could not remember. He glared at Ketrick. “You knew my mother? You know who I am!”

“Yes. I’m quite familiar with you, Mr. Steel.” Ketrick rubbed his hands together and then wiped spit from his lips. “They named you John, if you’re interested. It may have been short for Jonathan. I don’t remember. Fascinating how everything comes full circle, isn’t it? I was there on the day you were born, and now, I’m here on the day you will be arrested for trespassing. You know, you won’t be much good to Reverend Parker if you’re in jail. So, I suggest you put your curiosity aside and forget about the past. You wouldn’t like it, even if I told you. Now if you will be so good as to leave.”

Steel stood up shakily and glanced once at Lucas. His bemused smile was chilling.

Steel stumbled backward through the French doors and left blood on the handle. He glanced down, and only then did he notice the blood running down his fingers from the cut in his palm. Ketrick stopped at the open door and noticed the blood. He reached down with a long, bony finger and dabbed at a spot of blood on the door handle. He raised his finger delicately to his flaring nostrils and sniffed the spot of blood. Smiling, he placed his finger in his mouth and savored the moment as his eyes closed in concentration. He opened his dangerous eyes. “You have good blood, Mr. Steel. Very good blood. Take care of it. It tastes almost as good as the blood that was left on the knife Rocky used.”

Steel blanched, and he squeezed his hand in a fist. His heart pounded with horror. When he had seen the picture of the knife on the desk in Ketrick’s downtown office, he had thought it looked familiar. Now it all came back to him. The gold, curved blade covered with her blood. The mosaic tile of the handle shaped like the backswept wings of a hummingbird. He glared at Ketrick as his mind reeled. He was unable to find words.

Ketrick grinned, and the red blood outlined his chiseled white teeth. Ketrick pursed his lips and steepled his bony hands together. “The police returned the knife to me once the inquiry into poor Rocky’s death was over with. But don’t worry. I cleaned all of her blood off the knife before I displayed it. I wouldn’t want to dishonor the dead. See you later, alligator.”

Ketrick quietly closed the door, and Steel lost control, running dizzily across the yard to fall in the bayou. He swam away from the castle and away from the hideous beast who lived there, toward the brush, toward the less frightening
