On the morning of January 19, sixteen black men gathered on the Bayou Lafourche levee just below Abraham’s store. One of their leaders was a man named Peter Young and the other Amos Johnson. The men headed southward and were observed on the levee by Richard Foret, owner of the 1,800-acre Mary Plantation. His account, and those of others who witnessed what occurred next, is taken from Lafourche Parish court transcripts.

“I came up to Raceland to take the cars to come to Thibodaux on business,” Foret said. Upon arriving at the depot, Foret was approached by a young man named Nicolas Sevin, who told him the strangers were headed for his plantation.

“I saw the crowd going down and heard them say they were going down to Mary Plantation and would see if the hands were working, and if they were working they would prevent them from working…if it was possible,” Sevin said.
