As they descended in the water, Damian searched for Lexy. His light barely penetrated the murky layer they swam through. The crackling and snapping sounds of the unseen creatures surrounded him.

A couple more feet and they should be below the fog... And there she was.

A lightness in his gut spread as he watched her propel herself downward. Joy and peace radiated from her and his whole body responded. His heart too.

He had told her that he could live without personal love, and he would, but apparently his heart hadn’t gotten the memo.

The water cleared and a world of color and strange life forms came to view. She looked over her shoulder and gave him a thumbs-up. Lifting her large camera, she pointed at him.

He shook his head as she swam under the bars of the old rig, now covered in marine life. He followed her through the huge eight-legged structure. Communicating with simple hand signals, they explored the fantastical environment.

Fish swam up to her, then darted away. Her work made the world a better place while she put her personal life on hold to make sure her family was safe. She didn’t seem to have any problems putting her trust in God.

Light from above filtered through the water, blues and greens surrounded by the bright colors of the man-made reef. A man-made structure God used to provide shelter and protection for His smallest, most delicate creatures.

Earlier, Lexy had said that this was her favorite place to talk to God. It was also the perfect place to listen. God is our place of safety. He thought that was in Psalms. His mother had taught him to tell all his problems to God and to trust Him. He had stopped trusting in anything a long time ago. Maybe because he had stopped listening to Him.

Staying close, he helped her take and store samples. He checked his gauge. With a hand gesture, he indicated it was time to make their way to the surface. The sense of space and time was so different under the water.

She went up, but as he followed, something stopped him. Face tight, he looked down but didn’t see anything. He tried to go forward again. His heart rate jumped. He was trapped, but he couldn’t see or feel anything. Kicking out didn’t help. Five...four...three. The most important thing he could do was stay calm.

A hand touched his arm. Lexy had come back for him. He pointed and gestured for her to go up, but she shook her head.

She swam around him looking for the problem. Then she pulled a knife from her pouch and started cutting in the area of his prosthesis. His air was disappearing at a faster rate than normal. Pausing, she offered him her extra mouthpiece. It had the look of an octopus tentacle. She rolled her eyes when he refused.

She went back to work on his leg again, and he twisted to see what was happening. He still couldn’t feel anything. Finally, she lifted her hand and showed him a long, tangled fishing line.
