THEY WERE awakened at five in the morning by a man in black pajamas sitting on the foot of the bed.

“Grace?” Stirling mumbled.

“I found this tiny Lego guy that looks like Carl and this one that looks like Chuck. See? Carl has the suit and the blond hair, and Chuck has auburn hair and a little detonator. They’re awesome. Is there one of me?”

Stirling squinted at him. “Yes, but… oh God. It’s like the one on my desk. You’re not supposed to find all of those until Christmas Day. It’s your present, dumbass. You have to find all the Lego guys.”

Grace’s face lit up. The thief was already quite beautiful—and knew it—but his heart-shaped features grew transcendent, like moonlight, with joy.

“You gave this to me?” he asked.

“Me and Molly and Tienne,” Stirling muttered. “But it’s no fair if you find them now. Put them back. You don’t want people to think you ruined the surprise.”

“Well, if it’s supposed to be a surprise, people need to hide the little guys better.” Grace sniffed, but it was more a sniffle than an expression of disdain. “You guys really came up with this present? For me?”

Stirling sighed. He might as well say it. “We love you, Grace. You’re a really good friend. Now go hide those where you got them from and go back to bed.”

Grace gave an ecstatic little shiver, like a puppy, and then ghosted out of their room. As the door closed, Tienne mumbled, “I could have sworn you locked that.”

“I totally did,” Stirling told him, eyes drifting closed.

“You’d think con men would be better at hiding Legos.”

“I’ll talk to them about it.”
