CHAPTER SEVEN

MELANIE could have slapped herself. You shouldn’t get too close—I’m contagious. Oh, that was smooth…. She might as well have just come straight out and said that if only she didn’t have this nasty cold, she’d want to be kissed.

Not that she actually did want to be kissed, of course. What was the matter with her, anyway? Normally she didn’t have any trouble saying what she meant. Or—more to the point just now—not saying what she didn’t mean. But if Wyatt was of a mind to take her literally…What if he brushed aside the idea of catching her cold and kissed her anyway?

Then you get kissed, she told herself. Why are you making such a big deal out of it?

It certainly wasn’t as if she had never been kissed before. Compared to Erika’s record, Melanie’s experience would look like a guppy mounted next to a marlin. But still, she was hardly a novice. She knew her way around a good-night kiss, and she’d handled her share of lovers’-lane kisses, too. She’d dated a lot in high school, a bit less frequently in college as she’d settled down to her studies, and not much at all since she’d taken over the business. But kissing was like riding a bike, she thought. It was something that you didn’t ever forget how to do, even if the skills grew a little rusty.

“Oh, the hell with it,” Wyatt said under his breath, and his mouth came down on hers in a soft demand.

But there was a fallacy in relying on previous experience, Melanie quickly realized. None of it applied—because this wasn’t a good-night kiss. It wasn’t even a lovers’ lane kiss. It was a sonata in seduction.

That was the last coherent thought to drift through her head for quite a while, until she became aware that Scruffy, sitting at her feet with his rubber ring in his mouth, had started to whine, softly at first but with increasing volume and decreasing patience.

Wyatt obviously heard it, too, for he took one last nibble at her lower lip and drew back. “I may have to revise my opinion of the mop.” He sounded a little breathless. “It’s beginning to look as if he’s the only one here who has any sense at all.”

Wyatt had left in such a hurry, after that aborted kiss, that they hadn’t talked any more about the Ford. But there was probably nothing to discuss, Melanie told herself as she drove to work the next morning. He had said he’d left the paperwork on her desk, so he’d no doubt also jotted down the address where Brad Edwards wanted the Ford delivered. One of the guys could follow her across town in order to give her a ride back. She could even call a cab. There was no need for Wyatt to be involved at all.

And it would be just as well if he wasn’t, she thought when she walked into the shop to say good morning, because the first thing she saw was four very interested faces turning instantly in her direction.
