Chapter 43
THE ART OF XIREN
Later this day, Ulysses meets Luke for the martial arts lesson, on the oval near the large fig.
âThere are ways to manipulate others and their thought patterns,â Luke says.
âSuch as through sending dreams?â
âYes. But in the waking world too. And without the use of psychic powers. How do you know about sending dreams anyway? Has Emit already begun teaching you?â
âYes, just today.â
âThatâs strange, normally he saves this for when a member is self-actualised,â Luke says as he squints his eyes and seems to study Ulysses.
âI believe Iâm ready,â Ulysses says.
âBelieve me, youâre not ready, Ulysses,â Luke smiles. âNo oneâs ready before they self-actualise.â Luke looks intently at Ulysses. âI wonder what he sees in you that heâs willing to take this risk?â
Ulysses shrugs his shoulders.
âIâll have a chat with him later and see if I should introduce psychic and magical elements into the martial arts training. But for todayâs lesson, Iâll show you a powerful psychological trick. The Art of Xiren.â
âXiren?â
âItâs where you confuse your opponent to the point where they are unable to move, effectively freezing them. It allows you to have complete control of them.â
âHow does it work?â
âUlysses, I want you to listen very carefully. This is important,â Luke says in his powerful, deep voice as his arms and hands move gracefully, similar to a cobra moving in time with a flute. And as his arms move, Luke makes intricate hand movements and gestures. They seem to come fluidly and naturally. He speaks words that he chooses purposely, as if he knows exactly what to say to penetrate Ulyssesâ subconscious. âThis isnât real,â Luke says with such conviction that it strikes Ulysses.
âWhat isnât real?â
âDo not you know? This world. This life. This is not real. You have always known this. You are simply afraid to awaken.â
Suddenly Ulysses feels more present, more awake than he ever has been. He is so alert that he can hear a faint humming in his ears. It feels as if every element in his body has suddenly been caught out playing a game. That, deep down, every part of him knows that this life is not real. And with this realisation he becomes incredibly fearful. Ulysses worries that if he does not go back to being unconscious to this fact, he could leave this reality forever. And he does not want to leave. He prefers to be asleep. He wants to be with the beauty of the world that he knows. With Delta.
Luke begins to move his arms fast and then slow, fast and then slow, continually and in repetition. He seems to create a hundred arms to Ulysses. âBecause you do not remember it is easy to forget. Do not you know who Delta is?â
Ulysses hears the words, though Lukeâs hand movements subconsciously take energy away from his concentration. Everything is becoming harder for Ulysses to process. It is like he is more conscious than he has ever been while his mind is simultaneously becoming like stone. Ulysses only just manages to answer the question, almost on autopilot.
