As I watched her walk away, I struggled to exude a calm confidence. In an unbelievably short period of time, Ash had become incredibly important to me. The thought of something happening to her, the thought of her being ripped away from me made my chest ache in a way to which I was completely unaccustomed. Still, I smiled and urged her on.

My mind raced as I created this plan on the fly, which apparently had become my new normal. In the past, I’d been nothing if not calculating. So, I hoped with my speed and stealth, I’d be able to accomplish everything I needed in rapid succession and return to her. Last class, I’d discovered the gym where Master Lin taught martial arts had high dark ceilings and essentially hidden rafters. I planned to watch from there. First, I’d gather our supplies.

Slipping out a side door, I scampered up the side of the building using the drain pipe. Once on the roof, I scanned the area for the best route to the dormitory. With a sigh, I accepted this route would involve rushing around the outside wall. In a matter of minutes, I’d reached the it and used the same tactics as before to gain entry. Tonight, however, I needed to be more cautious. I couldn’t be sure there wasn’t a trap inside the room, or that Ash’s father didn’t lie in wait.

With my ear pressed against the wooden door, I closed my eyes and listened intently. After more than a minute, I was satisfied the suite truly was vacant. Slowly, I punched in the code and turned the handle. Sure enough, I was alone. Without hesitation, I moved to my room first, gathered a few necessities, and then stuffed them in my cross-body satchel. We’d need to travel light. Then I went to Ash’s room. She’d need far more supplies. I picked two outfits for her consisting of yoga pants, one short sleeve shirt, and one long. Then I sifted through her underwear drawer, well aware she’d be pissed later when she realized I’d pawed through her unmentionables. Naturally, this made me snicker. Still, practicality meant she’d need panties, socks, and a bra.

I grabbed a few toiletries from the bathroom…her brush, a couple hair ties, deodorant, toothpaste, and our toothbrushes. Then I frowned. Fall in the mountains. I’d need a cave to prevent sunlight from killing me. She’d need warmth and food so she didn’t freeze or starve to death. We were doomed. I could feel it.

In a day, my objective had changed from killing people to killing my mother. As for Ash, she’d need to find out why her father sought immortality. All this we were supposed to accomplish without so much as aid from anyone but each other. I shuddered at the impossibility of it all. Doomed.

Oh, but I had to press on. I closed my eyes and concentrated for a moment, feeling out Ash. Drinking from her gave us a connection she’d absolutely loathe if she completely understood the depth of it.
