It was a few days or so later and after more sorting of Jill’s aunt’s belongings, Nina was standing in the front garden of The Summer Hotel, wondering where to start with the weeds. She’d taken a good hard look at the front of the place and decided that clearing the front would make the whole place look a lot better. It couldn’t really look a lot worse.

Standing on the old cobbled paving stones, she looked left to right, trying to decide what to do first. She had to laugh – when she was in the flat and tending to the pots on the ledge she’d sometimes thought of herself as a gardener. Hah, hah, hah. She now knew she was no gardener with not a lot of experience at all. She really was way out of her depth. Weeds were everywhere around her, and so high, she wondered quite what might be lurking. She wrinkled her nose at strange brown patches in clumps in the weeds here and there. It looked as if someone, possibly the useless house-sitter before her, had stood on the path and randomly sprayed weed killer willy-nilly. The result being large chunks of dead brown weeds sitting among rampant brambles. Nina went to the shed, grabbed various tools, but none that looked particularly impressive, and struggled back to the path, wondering quite how she’d found herself in this job in the first place.

Deciding to just get stuck in and see what happened, she bent down and started to yank out weeds. After pulling at the brown clumps about fifteen minutes in, she was making good progress and some of the dead foliage was in a pile on the path. Suddenly, she squealed as a gigantic load of spiders came out of a nest. The air was blue, and she jumped up and back in fear. Just as she was standing looking aghast at the spiders and shaking her head, a car pulled up, and she frowned as Birdie, from the chemist, jumped out. The shipping forecast blared from the car’s speakers.

‘Ahoy there. I thought it was you. I was passing on my way to my dad’s and saw you out the front.’ Birdie looked over the fence. ‘Looks like you’re busy. Everything okay?’

Nina made a face. ‘Oh, hi. I just ran into a spider’s nest. Revolting.’

‘Euh. That explains the look on your face.’

‘Not my favourite thing. I’m not keen on spiders.’

Birdie looked left and right at the weeds. ‘Looks like you’ve got your hands full. You need a strimmer by the looks of it.’

‘There’s a strimmer in the shed, but I plugged it in and it was as dead as a doornail.’

‘I do my dad's garden just down the road here. I can drop you in a strimmer if you like.’ Birdie pointed into the car. ‘We’re on our way there now. Dad’s got all sorts of power tools in the shed. I’ll run one down if you want to borrow one.’

Nina wiped her brow, still eyeing the spot where the spiders had emerged.
