Sugarcreek

Lisa watched with satisfaction as Nathan and Nancy said their lines perfectly during their part in the Christmas program. No mess-up this time, she told herself. I’m glad they both did so well and remembered the correct words for their parts.

When each of the younger pupils had taken a turn, all the children from the class Lisa taught sang a song. Although they were immature compared to the older students, Lisa was pleased with how well these young voices sounded as they sang each verse from “Away in a Manger.”

When the song ended, Lisa and her students took a seat to watch the older pupils perform.

Everyone from Yvonne’s class did a good job, including Danny, playing the part of Joseph. Originally, he was supposed to stand beside the chair where Barbara Miller, who played Mary, sat looking down at the doll representing the baby Jesus in the manger. But when Danny had told Yvonne that he’d be too nervous to stand and might cave in, she’d agreed to let him sit in a chair next to Barbara. The boys playing shepherds and the girls who had angel parts also did well as they’d gathered around Mary, Joseph, and the baby to sing “Silent Night.”

In Lisa’s head she sang each of the meaningful verses with her sweet students. During a moment like this, all the hard work of cleaning, decorating, and practicing for the program was well worth it. She felt sure that the parents and other family members of the students who had come out tonight appreciated the effort their children, as well as the teachers, had put into this special performance.

Lisa fanned her face with the piece of paper she held in case she’d needed to coach any of her students with their lines. Despite the cold weather outside, with nearly one hundred people inside the schoolhouse, the room had become quite warm and stuffy.

Better too warm than too cold, she thought. It wouldn’t be good for the scholars to be shivering as they said their parts.

After the last song had been sung and the program was officially over, refreshments were served in the basement. Most of the children had gifts for their teacher or other students in their class, so the excitement ran high during this special time.

Her pupils with their families sat at one of the rows of tables to eat and visit with others. One long table off to the side had been filled with an abundance of cookies and cakes. Each of the desserts had been furnished by many of the women who’d come for the program this evening. The table next to it had a couple of clear punch bowls filled with bright red sparkling juice and cups ready for thirsty guests. The room hummed with conversations going on about upcoming plans for the Christmas holiday. The smiles on the children’s faces warmed Lisa’s heart. It was a lot of work in the beginning, but it was worth it in the end, she decided.
