CHAPTER 9

BLETCHLEY PARK

‘In the spring of 1941, Britain was losing the war. The German Wolf Packs were sinking the ships bringing in food and raw materials to Britain left, right and centre – and of course we didn’t know where they were out there, waiting, lurking… Once naval Enigma was broken, the sinkings dropped by 75 per cent.’

Jerry Roberts

cryptographer, Bletchley Park

The Government Code and Cypher School was moved out of London to Bletchley Park in rural Buckinghamshire in 1938 to be safe from bombing. A top-secret establishment, known officially as Station X, it recruited an eccentric bunch of mathematicians, linguists, chess masters and crossword puzzlers, whose expertise in codebreaking helped win the war.
