Chapter 22

" Zoo... " I grumbled, looking grumpy at my simple reflection in the mirror " Why am I going to a zoo?

There were things I really should be worrying about, like finding a new job. Instead, here I was, wearing my best dress, a sky"blue muslin with tiny butterfly details on the skirt and bodice, which was a bit tight.

" Eleanor!! " Charity shouted from somewhere far away " Let's go already! I want to see the peacocks and Dayse wants to see the elephants!

I sighed. That outdated dress " it was the last dress I bought, two years ago " would have to be enough for a zoo.

" I'm coming! " I yelled, leaving the room.

I hurried down the stairs, arriving at the entrance hall where Dayse and Charity

were already wearing their hats and capes.

Theodore was wearing a dark overcoat and holding an elegant top hat in his hand, along with my hat and cape.

" Allow me to assist you " he said as I approached, his eyes analyzing me, making me feel naked. His strong hands draped my gray cape over my shoulders as I tied the dark blue ribbon of my hat. Even through the fabric of the cape, I could feel the warmth of his fingers.

" Thank you " I said, taking a step back for my own safety.

" It was an honor " he replied, putting on his leather gloves.

" Can we go now? " Charity asked impatiently.

" Of course " the duke and I spoke at the same time.

" Yayyy! " Charity cheered, jumping. Dayse took her hand and they left for the garden.

I stopped outside the door and locked it. Anyone living in Soho would know there was nothing to steal in our house, but after yesterday's strange fire, I thought it was better to be safe. I put the key in my dress pocket and stopped. How were we going to the zoo...where was the zoo?

" Come " called Theo, offering me his arm. I hesitated for a moment, and finally grabbed his sleeve.

" Where is the Zoo? " I asked confused. I had never been to one.

" It's not exactly a zoo " Theodore smiled " It's more of a private collection.

" A "private collection"? " I asked, even more confused.

Thankfully, Theo began to explain.

" A friend of mine's brother has his own exotic animals, here in London itself. He has peacocks, elephants, tigers, and even a bear " he listed the animals with his fingers " I sent him a letter after lunch and Auric's brother agreed to show us the animals.

" Oh, so your friend's brother is an explorer? " I asked.

" You could say that " Theo pointed to a street in front of us " Look, there's my carriage.

" Carriage? " Charity stopped walking just to look at the duke " We're riding in a Ducal carriage?!

" Yes, we are " Theo smiled " The property where the animals are is a little far.

"A little" how much? " I asked, stopping next to the carriage.
