"Jessica," said Elizabeth irritably, "would you please hurry? I'd really like to get to school a little early this morning."

Jessica removed another handful of objects from her bag. "They're in here somewhere," she said grimly. "I know they are. Yesterday was Sunday, and I used the car in the afternoon . . ."

"Don't tell me you two are taking the Fiat," joked Mr. Wakefield. "I thought you'd be going in Elizabeth's pink Cadillac from now on."

Elizabeth winced. Ever since Kris had picked her up for the dance, her parents had been dropping hints. She knew that they were curious to know what was going on, but she was trying to forget Saturday night, not remember it. Fortunately, right at that moment Jessica pulled a wad of tissues, ribbons, and candy wrappers from her bag. She shook it and it jangled. "Here they are!" she cried. "You see, I knew I had the keys."

"Great," said Elizabeth, already halfway through the door, "let's go."

"You're in a big hurry this morning," said Jessica as she started the car. "You have another meeting for the paper or something?"

Elizabeth sighed. "Or something," she said, looking over at her twin. "I've decided you're right about Kris. There's no point in going out with him when I know I'm not really interested."

"Especially when he does seem to be interested," Jessica added.

"Exactly," agreed her sister. "He'll think I'm encouraging him, when all I'm doing is being polite. And then I really will have a mess on my hands."

Jessica turned down the road to Sweet Valley High. "Take it from one who knows," she said with a laugh. "It's always better to quit while you're ahead."

Encouraged by her sister's advice, Elizabeth marched purposefully into the school. She would wait at Kris's locker until he showed up, and then she would tell him as nicely as possible that she had changed her mind about seeing him again. She would make sure that he understood that it wasn't because of him. She liked him, she really did. But she couldn't go out with him.

Elizabeth turned the corner and caught her breath. There, standing against the wall, was Todd. His arms were filled with books, and he was anxiously looking up and down the hallway. His eyes fell on Elizabeth. It was obvious from his expression that he had not been looking for her.

Elizabeth's first instinct was to turn right around and go back in the direction she had come from. But then she realized how silly that was. Here she was on her way to tell Kris that she couldn't go out with him because she still had feelings for Todd, but every time she saw Todd she wanted to run. She forced her lips into a smile. She and Todd just had to get over this awkwardness with each other, Elizabeth decided.

"Hi, Todd!" she called brightly.

"Oh, hi, Liz," he answered lamely. His eyes were looking everywhere but at her.

She came to a stop right beside him. "How are you?" she asked, amazed at how normal her voice sounded.
