âShit, shit, shit! Iâm infected!â Ryan turned his head, unable to look at his wound.
Fiona leant over and put her hands against his chest to make him lie back down. He was panicking, a shambling monster rising up in his guts and trying take control of him. The numbness in his limbs gave way to terror.
âDonât touch me! One of those things slashed me. Iâm infected.â
Fiona pushed down harder on his chest. âCalm down, Iâll take a look.â She pulled off his sock and everyone gathered around. Miles knelt beside Ryan and squinted, tilting his head left and right to get a better view of his foot. The sunlight bounced off his bald dome.
âItâs just your pinkie toe,â Miles finally said. âThe tiniest of scratches.â
Chloe lifted something in front of Ryan, his trainer. The mesh covering the toe had torn wide open. âLooks like your shoe took the worst of it.â
Ryan threw his head back and groaned. âIâm infected.â
âNo, youâre not!â Fiona got in his face, weight still on his chest. She removed one hand and waved her burnt forearm in front of him. âI got scratched, too, but you saved me. Now weâre going to figure out a way to save you.â
Cameron appeared at the back of the huddle. âGive the lad some air. Yer pecking at him like a flock of hens.â
Everyone moved aside as Cameron manhandled Ryan onto a chair. He cried out in pain but the big Scot showed little compassion. He couldnât feel the scratch on his toe, his body was too broken from the fall to feel anything except for an overall, draining agony. If he hadnât landed in the flowerbeds, things would have been much worse. He could have broken his back. As it was, his worst wound was his badly bleeding right forearm.
Although thatâs not the injury Iâm worried about.
Iâm so screwed.
Fiona marched over to the bar and yanked a bottle of vodka off the wall, ripping the optic away with it and leaving behind a hole. She took a quick swig and returned to Ryan, handing him the remainder of the bottle and telling him to âDrink as much as you can.â
A drink was exactly the thing he needed, so he received the bottle greedily. As he lifted it towards his lips, he noticed Tom standing on the outskirts of the group looking pale. Ryan tipped the bottle at him in salute. âHereâs to the worst stag party in history. Bottomâs up.â
He swigged from the bottle until his burning throat could take no more and he was forced to pull it away from his lips. Gasping, he thrust the bottle away. Fiona took it, then startled everyone by smashing it over the back of a chair.
Miles shielded his face and yelled. âThe blazes are you doing, woman?â
âWhat needs to be done. Hold him down.â
Ryan didnât understand, but Cameron obviously did because he lunged at Ryan. Ryan tried to fight him off, but he was too weak. The big Scot wrapped an arm around him from behind and held him.
