“ ‘O whah yuh goin’ Angel,

Wid yo’ wings all dipped in gol’?

Gwine down to de rivuh Jurden

Fo’ to res’ mah weary soul.’ ”

Rose laughed as she dropped to the piano bench. Her fingers made a soft rippling accompaniment to the song Juno had been singing as she talked:

“If I have the Society of the Folded Hands behind me I’m elected. Uncle Nick, we’ll attend one of their meetings. We’ll—what’s coming next,” she wondered aloud as Jupiter crossed the hall to answer a ring at the front door. Idly, as people will, the four in the living room held their breaths to listen.

“She not at home.”

Claire Grahame’s eyes sought her daughter’s. There were only two “shes” in the house and they were at home. What did Jupiter mean? His voice was insufferably overbearing as he insisted:

“I tell yo’, Missy Rose she not at home. W’en yo’ come to dis yere house again, Napoleon Bonypart Long, yo’ come de bac’ do’ de way yo’ uster. De fron’ do’s fer quality, I’m tellin’ yo’.”

Before the listeners could recover from their horrified amazement the door had banged shut and Jupiter was on his way ell-ward muttering to himself. Rose sprang to her feet with a shocked:

“Jupiter!”

Anthony Hamilton’s laugh was brittle. He dropped his head to the back of his chair and blew smoke-rings into the air above him.

“After that—the deluge,” he misquoted cryptically.
